Enlighten

Our History Department for the academic year 2021-2022 got inaugurated. The chief guest was Mr. Sethuraman, Vice president of Tamil Nadu Congress committee. In light of his speech I would like to highlight his talk which inspired me.

He mainly stressed on the importance of education. An educated person is respected everywhere. People can snatch your money, property, assets. But they can’t snatch one thing from you that is the knowledge you acquired. The education you gained will remain with you only till the end of your life.

He recalled what Nelson Mandela told about the importance of education.

How can we destroy a country?

You don’t need missiles, fighter jet, atom bomb all that. By annihilating the education system of a country you can destroy a nation. It only requires lowering the quality of education and allowing cheating in the examinations by the students. ‘Patients will die at the hands of such doctors’. ‘Buildings collapse at the hand of such engineers’. ‘Money is lost at the hand of such economists and accountants’. ‘Humanity dies at the hands of such religious scholars’. ‘Justice is lost at the hands of such judges’. The collapse of education is the collapse of the nation. Because of educated people only a nation become developed. A nation progress because of educated minds.

 Then he said,

‘I know you young people are very attracted to politics. You young people are the future leaders. But ‘the day you become fan of a politician, that’s the day you have failed as a citizen.’ You should have your personal opinion. If you see something wrong question them. Be a good citizen. And make your country proud.

I was really moved by his speech. I only highlighted which inspired me. I was thinking that many section of the Indian society is not educated. We say that India is a developing country. I started to hear this for a long time. Indian society is largely dominated by religion. Religious extremism crippled our country. It’s a main issue we face. Even religion have dominated the politics. As the great French philosopher Montesquieu clearly stated the separation of religion from the government.

I hope that India will surely progress in the shoulders of educated youths.
